WIPO China: Innovation and Intellectual Property Empower a Green Future

Beijing, 12 May – The WIPO GREEN China City Acceleration Beijing Event 2026 was successfully held in Beijing, co-hosted by the WIPO Office in China, the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, and the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission. Under the theme "Innovation and Intellectual Property Accelerate Green Development," the event showcased practical approaches and innovative models in the global green transition.

Ms. Liu Hua, Director of the WIPO Office in China, noted in her speech that green innovation is currently presenting three major trends: deep integration of digital and green technologies, accelerated market entry of green technologies, and intellectual property playing an increasingly important role in green competition. She specifically mentioned that China accounts for 60% of the world's valid invention patents in artificial intelligence and continues to lead globally in published patent applications in green and low-carbon technologies.

Ms. Liu reviewed the five-year achievements of the WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project in China, noting that its development can be summarized as "Five Cities in Five Years," covering national strategic regions including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Greater Bay Area. The number of WIPO GREEN partners in China has grown to 16, including leading enterprises such as Huawei, Xiaomi, CATL, and Tencent. The two sessions of the IPMC have served more than 50 enterprises, with over 80% of the first cohort having taken practical actions such as international patent deployment. Looking ahead, she stated that WIPO GREEN will deepen its efforts in four areas: platform upgrading, integration of IP management and climate technologies, global promotion of IPMC, and expansion of the green technology database.

Mr. Guy Pessach, Director of the IP for Business Division of WIPO, spoke highly of the solid foundation of China's green innovation in his video speech. He noted that the vitality of China's green innovation ecosystem is impressive, with small and medium-sized enterprises contributing more than 70% of green innovation achievements, and the two sessions of the IPMC achieved a 100% participant satisfaction rate and generated more than 500 new IP applications, strongly demonstrating China's green innovation potential. He emphasized that intellectual property is the core engine for green technologies to move from technical potential to global commercialization, and WIPO will continue to support the expansion of the IPMC model to more cities and industrial parks in China, providing stronger IP protection support for green enterprises.

Mr. Zou Ling, WIPO GREEN China Ambassador, stated that China is an important force in the WIPO GREEN global cooperation system and has contributed more than 13,000 green technologies to the platform. He fully affirmed the valuable experience gained from the Beijing pilot over the past five years, pointing out that "Chinese Practice" provides useful references for global urban green transition. He expressed that he will continue to play the bridging role as WIPO GREEN China Ambassador to facilitate the in-depth matchmaking of green innovation resources between China and other countries.

Mr. Zhou Liquan, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, pointed out that as the world's first pilot city of the WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project, Beijing has provided a replicable "Beijing Solution" for the green transition of global mega-cities by launching a green channel for patent pre-examination in energy conservation and environmental protection and building a technology matchmaking network. He stated that Beijing will continue to refine the WIPO GREEN project model and facilitate the transformation and deployment of green technologies with quality IP services.

Head of the Resources and Environment Division of the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that Beijing is accelerating the development of an international benchmark city for green economy, creating a dual-engine driving force together with its global benchmark city for digital economy. She noted that the Commission will strengthen policy empowerment, regulate the operation of the National Green Technology Exchange Center, and activate the market ecosystem for green achievement transformation, contributing to global green and low-carbon transition.

Fruitful Achievements: Closing Ceremony of the 2nd IPMC and Release of Progress Report

The closing ceremony of the 2nd China Greentech IP Strategic Acceleration Camp (IPMC) was held during the event. Mr. Zou Ling, Ms. Liu Hua, Mr. Xie Hongxing, Director of the Bluetech Clean Air Alliance, and other officials presented completion certificates to 20 enterprises, including Beijing Union-Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. and Hefei Leaf Biotech Co., Ltd.

Mr. Peter Oksen, WIPO GREEN Green Technology and Research Manager, released the report Accelerating the Application of Green Technologies in Beijing – Progress Report of the WIPO GREEN China City Acceleration Project Beijing Pilot via video. He pointed out that the Beijing pilot project has achieved remarkable results, established an efficient technology matchmaking system, formed a replicable and scalable "Beijing Model," and provided an important reference for global urban green transition.

The event also featured an IP strategy training session titled "Innovate for a Green Future," along with exhibitions and matchmaking sessions for green technologies in fields such as new materials, biotechnology, and clean energy. Representatives from multiple technology providers and demanders signed strategic cooperation agreements on site. More than 150 representatives attended the event, including officials from the China National Intellectual Property Administration, relevant Beijing municipal departments, industry associations, universities, and enterprises such as Xiaomi, Tencent, CATL, GCL Group, and China Energy Investment Corporation.
