What if a needle and thread could change women’s future?

Embroidery is a source of income and pride for women in the South of Egypt.

Once an informal craft, embroidery is now backed by intellectual property, helping the artisans earn more, build their brands and reach wider markets.

Called “Tally”, this cotton fabric is embroidered with silver, cooper or brass thread.

The Tally craft tells a story:  its motifs and designs reflect the history of the artisans’ town, Sohag.

Through a WIPO project supporting the artisans, More than 20 women are growing their businesses.

With training and mentorship, They each filed trademarks and registered a collective mark, “Tally Shandaweil” to use as a shared brand.
