Advanced PCT Seminar
WIPO’s annual Advanced PCT Seminar was held at the Organization’s Geneva headquarters on 30 September and 1 October 2026.
Seasoned PCT users including patent attorneys, paralegals and IP Office professionals joined senior WIPO staff from the PCT team at the International Bureau to review best practices and discuss recent and pending developments in the PCT System. The program included interactive workshops and roundtable sessions to facilitate the exchange of views and experiences.
Topics raised included (among others): requirements for the provision of information in international applications; possible disclosure of information; use of declarations when filing an international application; filing requirements for drawings; possible considerations in choosing a receiving Office; and requirements for signature.
This year’s program included a special focus on the national phase in selected Asian patent Offices including the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the Ministry of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Korea (MOIP).
Participants were also briefed on several aspects of the ePCT system including filing through DOCX format, and had a guided tour of PCT operations at the International Bureau.
The seminar was an in-person only event and discussions were not recorded, but many of the points covered will feature in upcoming Practical Advice articles in this Newsletter. Experienced PCT users are encouraged to join future advanced seminars, and you can also contact WIPO to discuss any specific training requirements.
