Malaysia Recognizes WIPO’s International Patent Drafting Training Program

During its official visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, WIPO Director General Daren Tang signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU)) with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) to strengthen the country’s patent system through the WIPO Patent Drafting Program.

Through this MoU, MyIPO recognized Malaysians who have obtained the certificate awarded by the WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program (IPTDP) as having obtained a number of credits towards the official accreditation as patent attorneys in Malaysia. This MoU strengthens Malaysia's innovation ecosystem. Innovators need skilled patent drafting professionals who can help transform their ideas into valuable commercial assets. Professionals who take the IPDTP work toward developing patents that will support an innovator's journey to market, crafting applications that anticipate different implementation approaches and consider how various parties may manufacture or interact with the invention.

The WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program, launched in 2022 in partnership with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI), provides comprehensive 8-month hands-on training. The Program has already trained professionals from over 23 countries, with Malaysian participants contributing to this growing global network of patent drafting expertise.

This partnership represents a significant step forwards in Malaysia´s efforts towards building an innovation ecosystem that relies on IP as a tool for commercial impact and development.
