The WIPO Academy teamed up with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the State of Qatar (MOCI) and the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) College of Law to offer the second edition of the online Seminar on Intellectual Property (IP) Knowledge and Skills Development from November 27 to 28, 2023.
The online seminar was organized for 10 of HBKU’s Juris Doctor (JD) students enrolled in the "Law, Technology and IP" class. The seminar focused on the importance of IP in commerce and the role it plays in economic and cultural development. WIPO experts, officials from the MOCI, and HBKU professors addressed key topics throughout the program such as:
The seminar forms part of WIPO Academy's support to universities in enabling IP higher education, through its University Partnerships Program.
The IP law class lectures, featuring the WIPO and MOCI presentations, addressed a set of principles related to technological methods and intellectual property rights and procedures that benefit consumers, inventors, and interested stakeholders. Of course, lawyers should be aware of the laws to enforce these rights. Thanks to the lectures, I am eager to learn and stay updated about IP law and especially as it applies to new technology.
Fatima Mohamed Al Jaber, Third-year juris doctor (JD) student at HBKU
We were honored to again work with WIPO and MOCI to have this special training for our law students. HBKU Law is committed to building legal capacity in Qatar and the Middle East in areas that support innovation and job growth, and IP is critical to this endeavor. We are grateful to the faculty from WIPO and MOCI for dedicating their time and energy to our students.
Professor Susan L. Karamanian, Dean of the College of Law, Hamad Bin Khalifa University
Our partnership with HBKU College of Law and WIPO is strategic and in line with the importance Qatar attaches to capacity building and training in the field of IP, which is a powerful catalyst for innovation and creation in sectors linked to the knowledge economy. Qualified human resources in IP are an essential asset for our country and the region. We warmly thank our partners for the excellent organization of the IP law class lectures.
