The Turkish Constitutional movements initiated during the last period of Ottoman Empire(19th century), under which the 1839 Tazminat Edicts (the Rescript of Gulhane) and the 1859 Islahat Edicts (Rescript of Reform) were adopted.
The first constitution of the Ottoman Empire was adopted in 1876 under the name of Kanuni Esasi.
After the First World War, the modern state was established under the Leadership of Ataturk. In 1920, the Turkish Grand National Assembly was founded in Ankara and it adopted the Constitution of 1921 which granted sovereignty to the Turkish Nation.
The Ottoman Sultanate was abolished in 1922 and the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923.
On April 20, 1924, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey adopted the Constitution of 1924, which defined the national sovereignty, supremacy of constitution and secularism as the basis of the Republic.
On July 9, 1961 the Constitution of 1961, the second constitution of the Republic of Turkey, was adopted by a Constituent Assembly. It strengthened the principle of the supremacy of the constitution and fundamental rights and liberties.
The Turkish Republic's current constitution, its third since the foundation of the Republic in 1923 was adopted in 1982. The Constitution has been amended seventeen times, most recently on March 29, 2011.
The Republic of Turkey is a democratic, secular and social state governed by the rule of law, which has the principle of separation of powers. The legislative power is vested in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on behalf of Turkish Nation (Article 7). The executive power is carried out by the President of the Republic and the Council of Ministers (Article 8). The judicial power is exercised by independent courts (Article 9).
The Constitution contains provisions concerning intellectual property rights. It provides for the protection of art and artists (Article 64), and intellectual works(Article 18).
Furthermore, the Constitution guarantees the conservation of historical, cultural and natural wealth (Article 63), the principles and reforms of Atatürk, Turkish culture, Turkish history and Turkish language (Article 134).
