Expert Meeting and User Seminar to Strengthen Madrid System Expertise and International Brand Protection in Thailand

On September 8 and 9, 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized two events in Nonthaburi, Thailand, aimed at strengthening use of the Madrid System:

  • an expert meeting for officials of the Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand (DIP Thailand)

  • a seminar for businesses, trademark practitioners and users.

Both events were held in cooperation with DIP Thailand and with support from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) through the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global). This was the second in-person bilateral meeting between WIPO and DIP Thailand under FIT/Japan IP Global, and the first face-to-face seminar for Thai users of the Madrid System organized within this framework.

Strengthening operational excellence through expert dialogue

The expert meeting on September 8, brought together some 30 officials from DIP Thailand to discuss operational challenges, best practices and future developments related to the administration of the Madrid System.

These discussions focused on key challenges facing intellectual property (IP) Offices today, including trademark examination practices, digital transformation, and enhanced collaboration between IP Offices and WIPO. Participants exchanged experiences on processing international trademark applications, advancing digitalization and promoting the Madrid System more effectively to local businesses.

WIPO, DIP Thailand and JPO experts shared insights, including recent initiatives to modernize trademark administration and advance digital services. Participants discussed practical approaches that may support Thailand’s ongoing efforts to further strengthen the efficiency and accuracy of Madrid System operations.

The meeting concluded with a roundtable discussion reaffirming  WIPO, DIP Thailand and JPO's shared commitment to enhance operational efficiency and expand access to international trademark protection for businesses in Thailand.

Some 40 participants – representing companies, trademark practitioners and user associations across Thailand – attended the seminar on September 9. The event focused on the practical benefits of the Madrid System for Thai businesses seeking international growth.

Presentations highlighted how the Madrid System can simplify international trademark protection. WIPO, DIP Thailand and JPO experts provided practical guidance on filing options, examination procedures and available support services.

Participants also learned about WIPO initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of the Madrid System in Thailand and supporting the export and branding journeys of local businesses. As part of these efforts, WIPO has developed a range of Thai-language promotional and educational materials through FIT/Japan IP Global. These include a dedicated Thai landing page, localized digital advertisements, video content and user-focused case studies designed to help Thai businesses better understand the advantages of the Madrid System.

WIPO experts – including representatives from the WIPO Singapore Office (WSO) – showcased key digital services such as the eMadrid platform, demonstrating how users can manage international trademark registrations online and monitor their portfolios efficiently. WSO representatives also  highlighted tools, guidance materials and support resources available to help businesses in Thailand and across the ASEAN region better understand the Madrid System and develop effective international trademark protection strategies. In addition, representatives from IP Offices provided practical insights into procedures and examination practices, helping attendees better navigate the international trademark system.

The seminar also featured a user perspective session from Orgafeed Limited Company ("Orgafeed"), the company behind the sustainable pet food brand “Jaikla”. Through a recorded video message and presentation prepared by its co-founder, participants gained practical insights and lessons learned from using the Madrid System to support the brand’s international expansion (Link to the featured article: EN / TH). This real-world case study provided valuable insights for both current and prospective users of the Madrid System.

The afternoon session provided networking opportunities and one-on-one IP clinics, enabling participants to receive tailored advice directly from WIPO, DIP Thailand and JPO experts on their international trademark strategies.
