WIPO IP for Business Division Launches IP Management Clinics in Lao PDR and Cambodia to support SMEs design effective IP Strategies

This initiative supports small and medium-sized enterprises in leveraging intellectual property for growth and competitiveness

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) IP for Business Division has launched two new Intellectual Property Management Clinics (IPMCs) in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and Cambodia, marking a significant milestone in expanding practical IP support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the ASEAN region.

Implemented with the generous support of the FIT/Japan IP Global, the Clinics were held in Vientiane from 22 to 24 April and in Phnom Penh from 27 to 29 April 2026, bringing together entrepreneurs and IP experts to translate intellectual property into concrete business strategies.

Bridging IP and Business Strategy for SMEs

The IPMC is a flagship WIPO initiative designed to help SMEs use intellectual property as a strategic business tool. Through a blended approach combining in-person training with follow-up mentoring, the program supports companies in transforming ideas into competitive businesses.

Across both countries, SMEs demonstrated strong demand for practical support. In Lao PDR, nearly 30 companies participated, reflecting sectors such as agriculture, food and beverage, e-commerce and handicrafts. In Cambodia, around 20 SMEs from technology, green innovation and creative industries joined the program.

From Awareness to Action

The Clinics were designed as hands-on working sessions, moving participants from understanding IP concepts to making real business decisions. A key feature was the IP Strategy Game, an interactive exercise where entrepreneurs navigated typical business scenarios, allocated limited resources and aligned IP choices with commercial goals.
