Building IP Capacity for the Judiciary of Sri Lanka: Launch of New IP Benchbook

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched the newest title in its Intellectual Property Benchbook Series, dedicated to Intellectual Property Adjudication in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE) and the Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute (SLJI).

As with other titles in the Series, the Benchbook is designed to strengthen the adjudication of intellectual property (IP) cases by providing jurisdiction-specific content oriented towards the needs of judges.

Authored by retired Court of Appeals Justice Ruwan Fernando, Intellectual Property Adjudication in Sri Lanka (the Benchbook) will serve as a practical, accessible reference for judges, judicial officers, and others seeking insight on the interpretation and application of IP law and procedure in Sri Lanka.  It will be incorporated into SLJI’s judicial education programs on IP and represents an important milestone in WIPO’s ongoing efforts to provide tailored, dedicated support to the Judiciary of Sri Lanka.

On November 30, 2025, representatives of WIPO, the European Union, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) formally delivered the Benchbook to Justice Sampath B. Abayakoon, Director of the Sri Lanka Judges’ Institute, in the presence of judges of the Supreme Courts of Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Intellectual Property Adjudication in Sri Lanka is part of WIPO’s work for judiciaries, which promotes judicial exchange, judicial education, and resources to support fair and effective justice systems that allow the IP and innovation ecosystems in each Member State to fully realize their purpose.
