WIPO Pearl API for Terminology Now Available in a New Platform

The API (Application Programming Interface) for the WIPO Pearl terminology database is now available in the WIPO Business Partner Portal, a new platform offering a simplified procedure for subscribing.

Launched in 2021, the API provides access to scientific, technical, and legal terminology related to intellectual property (IP) in 10 languages from the WIPO Pearl database. WIPO Pearl supports accurate understanding and use of scientific, technical, and IP legal terms, and helps users identify reliable equivalents for terms in another language. The database features more than 285,000 terms in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, and is developed by experienced language experts and terminologists at WIPO, together with a number of collaborating institutions.

Who benefits

  • Translators, interpreters, and editors – Find reliable, validated equivalents in 10 languages for scientific, technical, and IP legal terms in 29 subject fields.
  • Intellectual Property Offices and IP legal firms – Access reliable scientific, technical, and IP legal terminology in 29 subject fields and in the 10 publication languages of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), supporting tasks such as prior art identification.

Key functionalities

  • Search WIPO's database of scientific, technical, and IP legal terminology in up to 10 languages.
  • Search for a term in one language and find reliable equivalents in up to 9 other languages.
  • Search for terms across all records or filter for specific subject fields.
  • Access the full database record for a given result, including a defining context for the term, its source, and a term reliability score, using the corresponding record ID number.

Good to know

The API allows third-party software to connect automatically to WIPO Pearl and draw on its information and functionalities, making it possible, for example, to search WIPO Pearl terms without visiting the WIPO Pearl website. The API does not, however, provide all the features and functions available on the WIPO Pearl website, such as concept maps, concept path search, image search, and search in PATENTSCOPE.

How to subscribe

Subscribing to the WIPO Pearl API is free. The API may be tested without subscription, subject to a limited number of queries, allowing prospective users to assess whether it meets their needs. Following a successful test, an application for subscription may be submitted to obtain higher usage limits. Further details are available on the WIPO Business Partner Portal.
