World IP Day 2026 Youth Video Competition - People's Choice Prize: Kalaripayattu a Traditional Sport: IP and its Protection

Стенограмма

From the days of my school, I admired Kalaripayattu, which is an ancient martial art from the indigenous people of Kerala.

"Kalari" means the traditional place of practise, and "Payattu" the fight which demands rigorous physical practise, mental and spiritual peace.

Coming down from generations to generations, Kalaripayattu sustained over the years its defensive techniques to combine sports functions like fitness, education, competition, and economy, uniting the people around the world for physical and mental peace.

This made the UNESCO identify Kalaripayattu to be a traditional sport, and now Kalari is included in the Olympics as a demonstrative sport too.

Over the years as I grew, I started researching on IP rights and understood that traditional sports under the traditional cultural expressions can be protected and promoted by the IP system.

For example, innovating equipment and registering a patent, claiming for broadcasting rights, registering a unique symbol under the trademarks, and protecting the knowledge from any misappropriation.

So let me inform the communities that Kalaripayattu can be a game changer protecting the sport through IP and inspiring other traditional sports.
