Regional Training Strengthens DA Implementation in Asia and the Pacific

WIPO organized the Regional Training on Effective Implementation, Communication and Dissemination of selected Development Agenda (DA) Projects for DA Project Managers and Officers (National Focal Points) from Asia and Pacific countries. The training was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 6 to 8, 2026, in cooperation with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), and with support from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.

The three-day training brought together 22 participants from 7 countries. It was the second in a series of in-person regional trainings for DA Project National Focal Points in 2026, designed to strengthen capacities to implement, communicate and disseminate DA projects effectively, with particular attention to project achievements, sustainability and long-term impact.

Three clinics across the project cycle

Each of the three clinics combined expert input with interactive discussion and practical exercises based on selected DA project case studies, and each addressed a different stage of the project cycle.

The first examined why projects succeed or struggle, drawing lessons from both success and failure and using root-cause analysis to diagnose implementation challenges and identify corrective measures. The second dealt with making results visible, distinguishing outputs from results, deciding what should be disseminated and mapping relevant audiences. The third addressed what sustains DA projects over time, ownership, partnerships and institutional arrangements, and included a practical exercise in which participants developed an impact and sustainability roadmap.

Participants worked throughout in small groups, an arrangement that encouraged peer-to-peer learning, the exchange of experiences across institutions and countries, and the practical application of the tools introduced during the sessions. The training also helped participants build stronger professional connections and encouraged continued collaboration among DA National Focal Points.

From training room to project reality

Participants welcomed the practical and participatory methodology of the training, pointing in particular to the combination of expert inputs, case studies and group exercises, and to the possibility of applying the concepts introduced during the sessions immediately to practical exercises.

Participants also pointed to areas where further support would strengthen their work on DA projects, including strategic project management, impact measurement, sustainability and scalability, digital communication, agile project management approaches and the use of artificial intelligence tools. Stronger connections between DA projects and national IP initiatives, policies and stakeholder networks were likewise identified as a means of enhancing the relevance, sustainability and long-term impact of project results.

The Kuala Lumpur training equipped DA Project National Focal Points with practical tools to diagnose implementation challenges, communicate results more effectively and plan for sustainability, supporting the effective delivery of DA projects in Asia and the Pacific.
