The Arab IP Register Initiative

The meeting marked the launch of the first implementation phase of the Arab IP Register.

Building on the experience of the ASEAN IP Register , and following efforts to introduce this model in Africa, WIPO is extending the approach to the Arab region to make IP data more accessible to users, businesses, researchers and IP offices across the region.

About the Meeting

The meeting aimed to assess the level of automation and the quality of IP data in participating countries, discuss the Arab IP Register concept and approaches to data auditing, validation and verification, and develop a framework and roadmap for the creation of Arab IP Register.

Discussions focused on the status of national automation systems; the availability and quality of trademark, patents and industrial designs data; document digitization; existing data-sharing arrangements; and national plans for further data validation and enrichment. Progress achieved by several offices in recent years in data capture, validation and document digitization is expected to enhance the value of the regional collection.

WIPO will continue supporting each participating IP office in two areas toward the establishment of the Arab IP Register: improving the quality, completeness and availability of national IP data to support more efficient operations; and helping offices prepare and share this data for inclusion in the Register.
