The notification by South Africa to the WTO under article 63.2 of TRIPS states:
'This Act provides for control over the sale and production for sale, the import and export of certain alcoholic products, the composition and properties of such products and the use of certain particulars in connection with the sale of such products.
Section 12 prohibits false or misleading descriptions for liquor products. Geographical indications pertaining to liquor products are, in fact, descriptions of such products and, therefore, if they are false or misleading, this Section may be used to deal with the situation.'
