New, WIPO Pre-Approved Terms for Goods and Services Now Available to Australian Trademark Applicants!

April 9, 2024

Good news! On March 26, 2024, IP Australia started using new WIPO pre-approved terms to classify the goods and services covered by both national (Australia) and international (Madrid System) trademark registrations.

What does this mean for you?

  • More flexibility and choice regarding the goods and services in which you can seek protection in Australia – the Madrid System’s goods and services picklist covers a wider range of terms than that of IP Australia.

  • Less red tape thanks to harmonized examination practices. A win-win situation whether you are an Australian applying for a national trademark or hoping to export your brand overseas using the Madrid System.

  • A quicker turn-around time for securing protection of your international trademark registration within and outside of Australia. When terms are pre-aligned at both national and international registration level, the risks of refusal of protection are reduced!

Classifying goods and services

You can use the Madrid System’s goods and services manager available under eMadrid, to select from thousands of pre-approved terms to build and check the list of goods and services in which you seek international trademark protection.

Reminder: Your international trademark registration inherits the list of goods and services covered by your national/regional trademark application or registration (“basic mark”). The scope of protection of your international trademark registration can be narrower, but not broader.
