Hague System – Viet Nam Modifies Declarations and Introduces Variant Design Indication

The Government of Viet Nam has announced key changes relating to its implementation of the Hague System for international design applications. These changes, effective August 21, 2025, are aimed at improving alignment with national laws and streamlining procedures for applicants seeking design protection in Viet Nam.

Key updates include:

  • International applications designating Viet Nam are no longer required to contain a claim for protection.
  • Viet Nam now allows requests for publication deferment (up to 7 months), though the standard 12-month publication period still applies under the Hague System.
  • Applicants can now indicate which design is the principal design and which are considered variants when designating Viet Nam, aligning with national legal requirements.
