WIPO Launches Executive Course on IP and Genetic Resources in the Life Sciences

A new executive course on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources in the Life Sciences (DL-427) is open for registration on the WIPO eLearning Center website. The course is scheduled to run from May 31 to July 17, 2021.

As a joint collaboration between the WIPO Academy and WIPO’s Traditional Knowledge Division, the DL-427 course serves as an introduction to strategic intellectual property (IP) rights management in the commercialization of genetic resources and data in various fields of the life sciences.

Who can benefit from the course?

The course is aimed at executives of life science enterprises and innovators who wish to learn more about how to incorporate IP strategies into their business models, and bring their life science innovations to the market. Policymakers working to facilitate the evolution of modern IP-based life science innovation ecosystems can also benefit from taking the course to learn about the latest trends and technologies in the field of genetic resources and data.

Once the course concludes, participants will be invited to receive advanced training and information resources on the use of WIPO’s services for IP rights management in genetic resources and data, as facilitated by WIPO’s Traditional Knowledge Division.

What does the course cover?

The DL-427 course covers a range of topics in the area of genetic resources and data in the life sciences, including:

  • Branches of IP law and policy relevant to the use of genetic resources and data in the life sciences;
  • Emerging issues in genetic resources law and policy, and related technologies;
  • Relevant legal instruments and international policy processes; and
  • Practical IP issues on genetic resources and data in the life sciences for policymakers and executives.

Upon the successful completion of the course and a final assessment, participants will be awarded a WIPO Academy certificate of completion.

The DL-427 course is currently available in English.
