Título: Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge for Economic Development: Empowering Local Communities of Uganda
Descripción: The Traditional Knowledge Division, in coordination and collaboration with the Regional Bureau for Africa and agreement with URSB is proposing to organize the Workshop on Intellectual Property and Traditional Knowledge for Economic Development: Empowering Local Communities of Uganda, scheduled to take place in Kampala, on July 4 and 5, 2017. In this regard, a preparatory meeting was held on May 18, 2017, at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, between Ms. Mercy Kainobwisho, Director of Intellectual Property at URSB, Mr. George Tebagana, Third Secretary, Permanent Mission of Uganda, Geneva, and WIPO officials Mr. Wendland, Ms. Banya and Ms. Rwangyezi, where it was agreed that the workshop would take place first and then formulation of a TK and TCEs policy/strategy and possibly legislation would follow based on the outcome of the workshop.
The proposed two days’ workshop would bring together over 100 participants including officials from the national IPO (URSB), government officials from other relevant ministries, traditional leaders and members of local communities from the districts, local representatives of relevant intergovernmental organizations such as UNESCO, lawyers and academia. In addition, so as to infuse a strong sub-regional dimension as requested by URSB, officials from three East African Community (EAC) countries will also be invited. The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) would be invited at its own cost.
