The WIPO biennium program for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for LDCs (2011-2020), the WIPO Deliverables and the Mid-term Review (MTR) of the IPoA adopted during the Fourth United Nations Conference on the LDCs (LDC IV) emphasize on strengthening the cooperation with other organizations at the national, regional and inter-regional levels and the need for collaboration among UN agencies to facilitate capacity building in innovation and technology in LDCs.
In this context, the Division for LDCs organized, in 2015 and 2017, two partnership programs, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on capacity building with particular focus on science, technology and innovation for the benefit of the LDCs of Africa and which brought together officials from diverse institutions, universities and organizations in Africa.
Following consultations undertaken with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Secretariat of UNECA, it is proposed to organize follow-up meetings on the above mentioned partnership programs, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from October 15 to 17, 2018.
These meetings will mainly focus on building technical and institutional expertise in the areas of innovation and technology for the benefit of the LDCs of Africa and the East African Community (EAC). Other pertinent IP issues will also be raised and deliberated at both events. In addition, the meetings will provide a platform for discussions and sharing e
