The Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for the decade 2011-2020, the WIPO Biennium Program for LDCs, the WIPO Deliverables as identified by LDCs' Ministers on the occasion of the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (UN LDC IV), emphasize the importance of strengthening the cooperation with other organizations at the national, regional and inter-regional levels and the need for collaboration among UN agencies to facilitate capacity building in innovation and technology in LDCs.
In this context, the Division for LDCs has organized three partnership programs, in 2015, 2017 and 2018, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on capacity building with particular focus on science, technology and innovation for the benefit of the LDCs of Africa and which brought together officials from diverse institutions, universities and organizations in Africa.
Following consultations undertaken with the Secretariat of UNECA, it is proposed to organize the follow-up meetings on the above mentioned partnership programs, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 4 to 6, 2019.
The objective of the planned meetings is to continue building project-based technical and institutional expertise in the areas of innovation and technology for the benefit of the LDCs of Africa, to provide a platform for discussions among participants on the formulation and implementation of projects, as well as to enable interacting with WIPO through a dedicated online platform, which was recently establish
