Title: A strategic Use ofthe IP System and Product Brand Techniques for Value Addition and Improved Performance of the Zanzibar clove Industry
Description: The above project is now entering its final phase. The project is a joint partnership between the Government of Zanzibar, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the International Trade Center (ITC). Since inception in 2011, the following activities / deliverables have been completed / achieved:
•A study entitled Report on the Needs Evaluation and Technical Support for a Sectoral IP Development Strategy for Small Scale Clove Producers in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, dated February 2011;
•A project document entitled “A Strategic Use of the IP System and Branding Techniques for Value addition and Improved Performance of the Zanzibar Cloves Industry – Project Proposal”;
•Tri-partite cooperation framework, signed between the Government of Zanzibar, ITC and WIPO;
•Implementing regulations to the Zanzibar Industrial Property Act 2008 and ensuing comments;
•Creation of a two-tier structured national committee to provide policy guidance on one hand and technical support on the other;
•Restructuring of the national industrial property administration with the creation of the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA);
•Establishment of the Zanzibar Bureau of Standards;
•Integration of the project within the framework of the Clove Development Fund;
•Installation of a Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) network completed;
•Creation of value chain interest groups in the area of production, packaging and marketing;
•Capacity building for a targeted number of national stakeholders through learning from best practice and specialized training on brand architecture and design;
•Brand creation (logo and trade name);
•A Training of Trainers Program on Effective IP Asset Management by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on agro-based SMEs; and
•Capacity building programs through learning from best practices in Ethiopia and Jamaica;
