Title: National Worshop on Building Respect for IP for Judges, Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Officials
Description: By letter dated November 18, 2014, the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of the Gambia (IPOG) requested that WIPO provide technical assistance by way of a seminar on IP enforcement for prosecutors, the police, judges and customs officers. The Director General of WIPO replied positively on December 18, 2014 (letters attached).
This proposal is submitted in the context of WIPO Strategic Goal VI to promote international cooperation on building respect for IP. The following arrangements are proposed for the Workshop:

Title: National Workshop on Building Respect for IP for Judges, Prosecutors and Law Enforcement Officials

Venue: Serrekunda, the Gambia

Dates: May 6 and 7, 2015
4.
Organizers: WIPO in cooperation with the Republic of the Gambia
5.
Objectives: The WIPO Strategic Goal VI-driven objectives of the proposed workshop are:
 to discuss the scope and impact of counterfeiting and piracy in the region;
 to examine evidentiary and procedural requirements in civil proceedings; interim measures; the environmentally-sensitive disposal of infringing goods;
 to review topical issues and case-law developments;
 to discuss the policy basis for criminal sanctions
and proportionality in sentencing;
 to exchange experience and information; and
 to emphasize the need for public awareness.

Program: A draft program is attached.
7.
Participants: Approximately 50 local participants, drawn from the Judiciary, Public Prosecutors, Police and Customs, to be invited by IPOG.
8.
Invited speakers: WIPO will invite one speaker from South Africa (Judge Louis Harms, former Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, South Africa).
