Technical Assistance Database: Activity Details

Title: Project on Use of Intellectual Property for Development an Utilization of Appropriate Technologies - Mongolia
Description: The objectives of the competition are to encourage and reward excellence in the invention of AT that could be easily and economically utilized by local communities to meet their needs, and that would contribute to create sustainable development of local communities. The effective utilization of patent information for devising solutions will be a key element of the competition.
The competition aims at developing AT, in particular by taking advantage of patent information for identifying suitable solutions to technical problems.
The Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia (IPOM) plans to organize an AT Competition in 2015, and has requested WIPO to provide support for this activity. This proposed activity would be in continuation of the AT Competition which was successfully organized last year in Mongolia.
Mongolia’s interest in conducting a second round of AT Competition is most encouraging. It demonstrates the usefulness of the Competition, and also shows that the country wants to take ownership of this WIPO initiative.
The Competition would essentially follow the format and process of the one organized last year. However, this time some changes are introduced on the basis of the evaluation undertaken in February 2015 (copy attached): creating awards for secondary school student; promoting the patent information use by adding patent information consultations to participants; and enhancing commercialization capacity by holding a workshop focusing on commercialization and AT. These changes would contribute to the sustainability of this initiative.
