1. In response to the invitation from Yves Gaubiac, Executive Director of the International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI), for the Director General to attend the Congress to be held in Bonn, Germany, the Director General responded that I would be the representative of WIPO in this meeting to be held on June 18 and 19, 2015. I am invited to address the meeting during the opening ceremonies. WIPO is also invited to participate in the meeting of the ALAI Executive Committee on June 17.
2. Given the relevance of the program to the current agenda of the Copyright Law Division, I submit for your consideration that Ms. Lung also take part in this meeting, as well as in the Executive Committee to be held on June 17, 2015. The meeting will be a valuable training and networking opportunity which will allow both Ms. Lung and me to hear the latest information on copyright developments from around the world as well as to interact with many key academics and experts from different regions of the world. The program will be of particular interest because the focus is on remuneration rights and ALAI has expressed its enthusiasm about having multiple WIPO representatives at the program.
4. We would of course use the program as an opportunity to promote ratification of the Beijing and Marrakesh VIP treaties.
5. Funds are available in the CLD budget for this activity. A cost estimate is attached.
