Title: Study visit of two Delegates from Malawi at WIPO’s Headquarters
Description: 1. Upon request of the Malawi’s Government, the Patent Law Division is preparing comments to the Patents Bill of Malawi of 2015 in order to revise it in the context of the multilateral legal framework and to make it more compatible with a number of IP related policies.
2. In this framework, during the WIPO Assemblies of 2015, it was discussed that two delegates from the Department of the Registrar General, Ministry of Justice of Malawi, would have come to WIPO’s headquarters for a study visit on patent matters and discussions on the Patents Bill of Malawi.
3. The Malawi Authorities are now reiterating their interest in WIPO’s assistance in reviewing their Patents Act with letter dated March 30, 2016, and are requesting its support in organizing a three day study visit for two delegates, namely: Mr. Chifwayi Chirambo, Principal Assistant Registrar General, and Ms. Kahaki Jere, Legislative Counsel.
4. The WIPO Director General, with letter dated April 27, 2016, has given a positive reply to the above-mentioned request; therefore it is suggested organizing the said meeting in Geneva from May 23 to 25, 2016. The program (attached) is aimed at shedding light on certain aspects of the Bill that deserve to be revised, deleted or updated, having in mind the international legal framework and Malawi’s public policies.
5. This activity would be financed by Program 0105.P3078. The cost would be CHF 5562 as indicated in the attached cost estimate.
