Title: National Meeting on Harnessing Intellectual Property for the Benefit of Women’s Entrepreneurship in cooperation with the University of Dar es Salaam
Description: Reference is made to the ongoing cooperation between the WIPO Division for Least Developed Countries and the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) and the implementation of the Training Program WIPO-Sida Advanced Training and Advisory Program on Intellectual Property Rights in the Global Economy for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
The Program is conducted on the basis of concrete project formulation by the participants, which aims to contribute to national innovation and invention and takes into account the short, medium and long term strategies of their countries to use IP as a tool for sustainable development and economic growth.
The implementation modalities of the national projects particularly emphasize the need for holistic cooperation between national institutions of higher learning, research centers, and business and industry for the creation of inclusive national innovation and IP systems which will benefit all stakeholders.
One of the national projects currently being implemented by the University of Dar es Salaam, relates to awareness raising on the benefits of IP tools for women entrepreneurs who are mostly SME and micro business owners. The objective of the project is to enable women entrepreneurs to adequately leverage the IP system for business development and growth and thereby narrowing the knowledge gap and promoting equitable access to the IP system.
The project is currently headed by Dr. Eugenia J. Kafanabo, Director, Gender Centre, University of Dar es Salaam under the supervision of the Division for Least Developed Countries.
Following consultations with the University of Dar es Salaam during the National Expert Group Meeting on the Appropriate Technology Project in Tanzania which was held from July 17 to 19, 2017, and taking into account the work done currently, it is proposed for a two day training and capacity building meeting on relevant IP issues to be organized for women entrepreneurs on August 28 and 29,
