WIPO will collaborate with the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) and the Singapore Innovation and Productivity Institute (SIPI) to help Singaporean companies grow their business with IP following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

Under the agreement, 57 companies will be selected to receive training from WIPO based on WIPO’s IP Tools for Business. The number ‘57’ was selected to celebrate the 57th anniversary of Singapore’s National Day.

The agreement was announced at a signing ceremony at which WIPO Director General, Mr. Daren Tang expressed the importance of IP to all manufacturing companies. He also highlighted the way IP is shifting from being a technical outlier to a fundamental business component required for business expansion. “The signing of this MOU is a milestone in the relationship between WIPO and Singapore’s manufacturing sector, underlining how innovation and intellectual property can support the sector’s small and medium enterprises to compete and grow” said the Director General.

President of the SMF, Mr. Lennon Tan, was pleased that the MoU would provide SMF members with the opportunity to understand that IP goes beyond being a protective measure, but instead can be a tool to help more businesses successfully enter the international and digital market arena.

Ms. Audrey Yap, Chairperson of SIPI, said: “As companies become more aware of IP matters, this collaboration with WIPO serves as the important first step to better understanding and utilising their IP in business and growing regionally”.

The signing ceremony was attended by leading Singaporean manufacturers, executive committee members of SMF and staff from the WIPO Singapore Office. A large number of media representatives were also present to cover the event due to its significance to the local manufacturing community. Around 22% of Singapore’s GDP is from manufacturing.

The Singapore Manufacturing Federation is one of Singapore’s largest business federations with around 5,000 members, of which 90% are SMEs. A key resource that will be promoted to their members will be WIPO’s IP Diagnostics. This easy to use business tool helps entities of all sizes to identify, protect and benefit from the intangible assets in their business.
