Big Data for Smart Policy: WIPO Announces Partnership with Harvard Growth Lab

A new partnership between WIPO and Harvard Growth Lab was announced at the 2025 WIPO Assemblies during a side event that showcased innovative approaches to leveraging big data for smart policy design in innovation ecosystems.

The event marked a milestone in WIPO’s efforts to enhance understanding of innovation ecosystems and their impact on global knowledge flows and economic development. The collaboration with Harvard Growth Lab will further this work by identifying strengths and growth opportunities in local innovation ecosystems.

We are looking forward to work together further to produce a report that can be on the desk of policymakers and business leaders in different quarters of the world and help policymakers design effective policies, particularly in the field of innovation.

Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General of WIPO’s IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector

“We need knowledge to transform the world from the way it is to the way we wish it to be… It’s been a privilege to collaborate with WIPO in trying to help the innovation process advance worldwide,” said Ricardo Hausmann, Harvard professor and Growth Lab Director.

This initiative underscores WIPO's commitment to fostering evidence-based policymaking in the field of intellectual property and innovation.

The complete video recording of the event, along with full transcripts in WIPO’s six official languages, is now available for viewing.
