WIPO to launch executive program for business managers

Geneva, June 8, 2006
Press Releases PR/2006/448

In response to growing demand for quality intellectual property (IP) education from businesses around the world, the Worldwide Academy of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will launch a new study program for business executives. The Executive Program, which supplements a number of programs that focus on human capital development, will offer world class business-oriented IP education and foster interdisciplinary teaching and research in business and management aspects of IP. The first open enrolment program - 'Strategic Intellectual Property Management' - will be held at WIPO's headquarters in Geneva on September 18 and 19, 2006.

"In today's global marketplace, intellectual property is an increasingly valuable corporate asset and a strategic business tool of importance to managers seeking to secure their company's competitive advantage," said Dr. Kamil Idris, WIPO Director General. Dr. Idris, who established the WIPO Worldwide Academy (WWA) in 1998, said "These courses will offer business executives some critical and constructive insights into IP strategy and effective IP asset management, considering the growing need around the world for IP-conscious business managers."

Led by accomplished professionals and academics from reputed business schools, international corporations and WIPO, the two-day intensive program will review the latest trends and best practices in the field of IP management through case studies and interactive discussions. Participants will examine the important role of IP as a strategic business tool and explore how IP can be leveraged for enhanced and enduring competitive advantage. Participants will reflect upon and apply the learning to their respective business environments.

Beginning with an overview of basic principles of corporate IP management, the program will move on to look at how IP is generated, managed and leveraged in global corporations and start up companies. It will consider some of the innovative ways of integrating IP in the marketing, finance and technology management strategies of companies for additional value creation.

Demand for quality IP education from business organizations has been on the increase around the world as managers realize that competitive edge depends on the implementation of a corporate strategy that harnesses their capacity to produce and convert ideas into technological prowess and market share. IP is a key component of such a strategy, enabling companies to leverage their technological know-how to add value to products and services that are attractive to increasingly quality-conscious consumers in the global marketplace.

The WWA serves as a center of excellence in teaching, training and research in IP. Its programs cater to different target audiences - inventors and creators, business managers and IP professionals, policy makers and government officials of IP institutions, diplomats and representatives, students and teachers of intellectual property and the civil society. Its five core programs are: professional training, distance learning, policy development, teaching and research. The tailor-made programs, including its distance learning with more than 40,000 participants since its inception in 1999, reach a large audience from around the world. The WWA seeks to continuously stay innovative by offering new programs to keep up with the ever-changing IP landscape. It also aims to promote international cooperation for enhancing IP human capital through global networking with stakeholders and partners.
