WIPO INVITES NGOS TO DISCUSSION ON IP AND DEVELOPMENT
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) invited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that participate in the Organization's work to an interactive session on intellectual property (IP) and development on Thursday, September 15, 2005. This meeting is part of WIPO's continuous efforts to be responsive to the needs and expectations of all stakeholders, including civil society.
Opening the meeting, Mr. Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director, Office of Strategic Use of Intellectual Property for Development, said this was the first of a series of meetings with the NGO community to enable a better understanding of the Organization's activities and to obtain input from the NGO community. He said the aim of the session was to hold informal discussions to develop a better understanding of issues under discussion and to determine strategies for future interaction and cooperation between WIPO and NGOs in addressing IP development issues.
Some 47 NGOs responded to WIPO's invitation to attend the interactive session. The meeting was open to all accredited NGOs having permanent observer status with WIPO and also to NGOs who have been granted ad hoc accreditation to attend the meetings of the Intersessional Intergovernmental Meetings (IIM) and a number of other WIPO meetings which in total amount to some 520 NGOs.
The forum covered a number of themes, namely WIPO's technical cooperation activities (including legislative advice and flexibilities), progressive development of intellectual property law, intellectual property and public health, management of copyright and related rights on the Internet, and future partnerships with NGOs.
In the concluding session, participants agreed that the meeting was useful and that such an informal forum proved a useful platform for constructive dialogue on issues that are of concern to them. They also agreed on the need to continue this practice on an annual basis.
