Geneva, July 29, 2002
Press Updates UPD/2002/173

The President of the Supreme Court of Sudan, Mr. Jalal Al-Din Mohamed Othman, led a delegation of justices of the Supreme Court to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for talks from July 22 to 26, 2002 with the Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris, and other senior officials of the Organization. The delegation was briefed on WIPO's activities and the importance of intellectual property for wealth creation and development.

The judges expressed keen interest in the activities of WIPO and appreciation for the wide range of programs organized in Sudan, including assistance for the recent establishment of a court specialized in disputes relating to trade and intellectual property. It is envisaged that the court, the first of its kind in the region, will expand its activities to train and raise awareness among judges and magistrates in both the African and Arab regions. Dr. Idris expressed WIPO's support for further assistance in the development of human resources, technical and legislative advise, and provision of information products.

The Director General urged the delegation to take a more active role in promoting an intellectual property consciousness and raising awareness of the importance of intellectual property to development. He welcomed Sudan's leadership in establishing a regional center for the resolution of intellectual property related disputes. The delegation was briefed on other areas of WIPO's activities, including norm-setting, assistance to developing countries and the Organization's services to the private sector.

The delegation said that the Supreme Court was committed to further strengthening the capacity of the judiciary to manage intellectual property cases. Rapid developments in the field of intellectual property made it necessary to constantly upgrade the expertise of judicial officials. The Supreme Court of Sudan is the highest judicial body of the country. Other delegation members included Mrs. Majda Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Nawery, Mrs. Nahed Athef Ismail, Mr. Ahmed Omar Mohamed Ahmed, Mr. Sir Saleh-Ali, Mr. Al-Shafi Khater Al-Nil,- Mr. Yahya Al-Taieb Abu-Shawra, Mr. Al-Tayeb Haj Attia, and Mr. Mohamed Al-Mahdi Bushra.
