Director General Pledges WIPO's Support to King of Jordan

At a meeting on Thursday in Geneva the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, pledged to His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, WIPO's continued support in building an intellectual property system that promotes development, attracts foreign investment and supports local innovation capacities in Jordan. The meeting focused on cooperation between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and WIPO.
Dr. Idris and the His Majesty King Abdullah II agreed on the importance of intellectual property to development and wealth creation and reviewed the status of cooperation activities since their last meeting in September 2000. Since then, WIPO has stepped up its technical assistance efforts, namely in the areas of information technology through training and supply of equipment to enable access to on-line intellectual property resources; technical and legal advice to the local pharmaceutical industry including training and technical assistance on issues relating to licensing and transfer of technology and in the area of enforcement through training of members of the judiciary and officials from enforcement agencies.
In addition, WIPO has organized a series of seminars in Jordan that have been attended by participants in the region as well as for specific target groups such as parliamentarians and judges. The objective of these seminars is to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property for development and its potential in promoting wealth creation.
Dr. Idris commended Jordan's firm commitment to ensuring a culture of respect for intellectual property and for having adapted its legislation to be fully compliant with its international obligations. He assured His Majesty King Abdullah II of WIPO's continued support in extending assistance to maximise the benefits associated with the use of the intellectual property system.
