Recognizing that the intellectual property system is of critical importance to the future growth and prosperity of a nation, the Government of Ukraine is firmly committed to strengthening its intellectual property system. Intellectual property protection is effective in safeguarding authenticity of culture, promoting wealth creation and economic development. It is essential in combating counterfeiting and piracy activities, which are a threat to the economic health and social and cultural well-being of a country.
In a meeting with President Kuchma, Government representatives and the media, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, said "Piracy and counterfeiting are a threat endangering the culture and heritage of a nation." President Kuchma stated that Ukraine is taking a series of measures to upgrade the national intellectual property system, including improved domestic legislation and the active implementation of rigorous enforcement mechanisms to combat counterfeiting and piracy.
The Government of Ukraine will continue to work closely with WIPO to enhance the national intellectual property system through stronger legislation, infrastructure development, training programs and public awareness campaigns.
