Geneva, July 18, 2001
Press Releases PR/2001/280
A web site linking women ambassadors in Geneva, New York, and Vienna in a forum that will enhance gender elements in multilateral diplomacy, went live on Wednesday. The web site is an initiative of the Geneva- based women ambassadors and is designed and hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Most of Geneva's 25 women ambassadors to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, in addition to several of their male counterparts, were present at the ceremony launching the newly created web site of the Women Ambassadors Network. The ceremony was held on the sidelines of the High Level Segment meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The web site, which may be accessed at http://www.womenambassadors.org and http://www.femmesambassadeurs.org, is intended to communicate, inform, and exchange ideas and debate on global gender related issues. The site will also enable the private exchange of information between the ambassadors in a secure manner.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Permanent Representative of Gabon, Ambassador Yolande Biké, paid tribute to Mr. Vladimir Petrovsky, Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, for his moral support to the project and to Dr. Kamil Idris, Director General of WIPO, for the technical support in the design, development and hosting of the web site. In addition, several women ambassadors emphasized the need to improve the focus on gender aspects of global issues.
