Policy Advisory Commission to Meet at WIPO

Geneva, June 14, 2000
Press Releases PR/2000/226

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Policy Advisory Commission (PAC) will meet in Geneva on Thursday, June, 15, 2000, to look into ways of promoting wider global understanding and use of the intellectual property system. The second session of the PAC will consider a number of on-going WIPO initiatives to make the existing international intellectual property system more responsive to rapid technological changes and to the challenges these pose in ensuring equal access by all countries. The PAC will also examine the role of the intellectual property system in promoting wealth creation.

The PAC, made up of eminent personalities from the fields of politics, diplomacy, law and public administration, is mandated to enhance WIPO's capacity to monitor and respond in a timely, informed and effective manner to international and regional developments in intellectual property, in information technology and in other fields bearing on WIPO's operations and its policy environment. The insights offered by members of the PAC help to ensure that the Organization remains relevant to the changing realities of the modern world and provide invaluable assistance in the Organization's quest to demystify intellectual property.

The PAC held its last plenary session in Geneva in April 1999 under the chairmanship of HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. A sub-committee of the PAC met in Amman, Jordan in July 1999 and again in March 2000 in Washington, D.C. The WIPO assemblies took note of the Commission's work at their annual meetings in September 1999.

The PAC is a purely advisory body designed to assist the Director General in identifying policies to deal with new and emerging trends in intellectual property. An evermore integrated global market place, the emergence of the digitally driven new economy and pioneering discoveries in biotechnology, have underlined the need to develop new visions and strategies to meet the challenges ahead. WIPO is the leading international organization charged with promoting creative endeavor and protection of intellectual property through cooperation between states. Given the rising importance of intellectual property as a tool for economic, cultural and social development, it is essential that the Organization remains responsive to the changing needs and concerns of all users of the international intellectual property system.
