The year 2005 saw a significant number of accessions or ratifications to treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO and the entry into force of a new international instrument relating formal patent procedures reflecting continuing commitment by member states in enhancing intellectual property legislation at the national level. In 2005, 45 instruments of accession or ratification of treaties administered by WIPO were deposited with the Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris.
En el año 2005, los tratados que administra la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) han sido objeto de varios instrumentos de adhesión o de ratificación; además, en ese mismo año entró en vigor un nuevo acuerdo internacional sobre determinadas formalidades relacionadas con los procedimientos de patentamiento, quedando reflejado así el empeño de los Estados miembros en mejorar las legislaciones nacionales de propiedad intelectual. L'année 2005 a été marquée par un nombre significatif d'adhésions ou de ratifications concernant des traités administrés par l'Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI), ainsi que par l'entrée en vigueur d'un nouvel instrument international relatif aux procédures de forme en matière de brevets qui traduit l'engagement continu des États membres à l'égard du perfectionnement de la législation relative à la propriété intellectuelle au niveau national. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) saw a 20% increase in the number of cybersquatting (abusive registration of trademarks as domain names) cases filed in 2005 as compared to 2004. In 2005, a total of 1,456 cybersquatting cases were filed with WIPO's Arbitration and Mediation Center. This increase represents the highest number of cybersquatting cases handled by the WIPO Center since 2001.

Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), meeting in the Program and Budget Committee (PBC) from January 11-13, 2006 took a number of decisions relating to the work of the Organization. The PBC agreed with the proposal of the WIPO secretariat that the recommendation of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) on budget transfers should be adapted to the specific needs of WIPO and that this decision should not be applied before the 2008/09 biennium and after the completion of the desk-to-desk review of the human and financial resources of the Organization.

Ernst & Young, the international audit and consultancy firm, has submitted its report to the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris. The firm was requested by the Director General last September to conduct an independent external review, under the supervision of WIPO's External Auditor, the Swiss Federal Audit Office, into allegations concerning WIPO.

Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have identified a number of topics relating to trademarks and industrial designs for future consideration. This came at a meeting of WIPO's Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (SCT). The 15th session of the SCT, which met from November 28 to December 2, 2005, was attended by 79 member states, one observer delegation, 4 intergovernmental organizations and 11 non-governmental organizations.

Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) advanced its work towards development of a treaty to update intellectual property (IP) standards for broadcasters in the digital age, at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) in Geneva from November 21 to 23, 2005. Mr. Jukka Liedes of Finland, Chairman of the SCCR highlighted the "high quality debates ... now higher than ever" and said that "there is today a much greater understanding of the concepts and issues contained in a second Revised Consolidated Text of treaty proposals.

El Sr. Jukka Liedes de Finlandia, Presidente del SCCR, destacó "la alta calidad de los debates ... ahora más alta que nunca" y dijo que "existe en la actualidad un entendimiento mucho mayor de los conceptos y cuestiones contenidos en una segunda versión revisada del texto consolidado de propuestas para un tratado".
Réunis à Genève du 21 au 23 novembre 2005 à l'occasion d'une session du Comité permanent du droit d'auteur et des droits connexes (SCCR), les États membres de l'Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI) ont progressé sur la voie de l'élaboration d'un traité visant à actualiser les normes de propriété intellectuelle applicables aux organismes de radiodiffusion à l'ère du numérique. M. Jukka Liedes (Finlande), président du SCCR, a souligné "la qualité des débats ... d'un niveau plus élevé que jamais", indiquant notamment que "les notions et les questions soulevées dans les propositions relatives au deuxième texte de synthèse révisé en vue d'un Traité sur la protection des organismes de radiodiffusion sont mieux appréhendées aujourd'hui".
