Country Study on Innovation, Intellectual Property and the Informal Economy:  Tradition Herbal Medicine in Ghana

Traditional herbal medicine is important in the health care delivery system in Ghana as in most African countries.  For people living in the marginalized areas of the country, accessing health care is a challenge in terms of the distance and the cost.  In Ghana, the estimated ratio of the Traditional Medicine Practitioner (TMP) to the population is 1:400 as against a ratio of the orthodox doctor to the population of 1:12,000 (STEPRI, 2007).  The TMP is therefore an important actor, in the health care delivery system in Ghana.

The Open Innovation Model

The Open Innovation Model is the second in a series of five research papers produced by the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property that provide insights on how IP interacts with decisions, transactions and processes related to technology development and dissemination. The report comes as businesses are being forced to contend with a range of factors, including globalization, advances in information and communications technology (ICT), and growing technological complexity that are providing an incentive to collaborate more closely on innovation.

This paper aims to inform policymakers and other stakeholders about the open innovation model, and its relevance to the business environment of today. Specifically, the report looks at the origins and evolution of open innovation, contrasting these with the traditional “closed” approach to research and development. Furthermore, it explores the importance of strategic knowledge management in the context of open innovation, demonstrating how IP rights can be used to help share technology and know-how in support of open innovation.

Role of Innovation in SMEs Performance: A Case of Malaysian SMEs

Innovation has been termed as the most crucial of the elements in today’s globalized and competitive environment. Companies focusing on innovation achieve not only competitiveness but also are able to sustain themselves for a longer period of time. The present study is conducted in the context of Malaysian SMEs using a sample of 870 SMEs from both manufacturing and services sectors. These SMEs have been found to be engaged in a variety of businesses and to some extent have also been involved in the process of innovation.

The results indicate that, although SMEs are aware of innovation and its relevance to organizational performance and growth, they are nonetheless unable to focus on innovation processes as much as they should to gain competitive position.

Patents, Trade Marks and Design Rights: Groundless Threats

In 2012 the United Kingdom Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Intellectual Property Office asked the Law Commission to review the law of groundless threats of infringement proceedings for patents, trademarks and design rights (but not copyright). After consulting on proposals for reform in 2013, the final report has now been published.

Making Innovation Policy Work

This book explores emerging topics in innovation policy for more inclusive and sustainable growth, building on concrete examples. It develops the notion of experimental innovation policy – which integrates monitoring and feedback at the policy design stage, and occurs continuously to improve impact and implementation. This approach should help improve the quality and efficiency of public expenditures supporting innovation policy.

Experimental policy making is particularly important for new and emerging innovation domains, where the scope for learning and improvement is the greatest. To make the discussion as concrete and relevant as possible for practitioners and policy makers, three emerging domains of innovation policy are explored in greater detail: innovative entrepreneurship, green innovation, and pro-poor or base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) innovation.

Eco-innovate!

The booklet overviews the emerging business opportunities that eco-innovation has to offer to companies that reconsider business models, develop new products, technologies or services, or improve production processes. The guide summarizes key business issues, questions and lessons learnt for SMEs as well as presenting selected eco-innovation good practices. This guide is divided into six sections. The opening chapter introduces the concept of eco-innovation. The focus then shifts to the key issues, challenges and opportunities of eco-innovation for SMEs.
