Madrid System Success Story: U Dazzle – A Brand Name Steeped in Meaning
June 12, 2023
We’ve published a new success story showing how the Madrid System levels the intellectual property (IP) field, making global trademark protection accessible to all trademark owners who are nationals of – or have a domicile or business in – any of the 130 countries that it covers, regardless of size or resources available.
In this story, we take you to the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago, a Madrid System member since 2020, to meet an exceptional fashion designer and entrepreneur, Rhona Eastman Jack.
Even though life stacked the cards against her, Rhona was determined to follow her dreams. Driven by a passion for sewing, she turned a problem into an innovative solution, inventing a multi-purpose and collapsible sewing ruler. But, without the expertise or resources to protect her idea, she kept it hidden for nine years. Today – with the help of the Madrid System – she is owner of her own company – U-Dazzle – and exporting her fashion ruler to three continents.
The Madrid System makes life easier. There are so many people like me with few resources. I wanted to file my trademark in multiple countries but could not find the finances to pay lawyers to file and manage my registrations. The Madrid System simplifies the process; it helps you to focus on the countries where you want protection, and to get up and running quickly!
Rhona Jack
Rhona, who was the first individual to file an international trademark application through the IP Office of Trinidad and Tobago, is one of the most active advocates of IP and the Madrid System in her country, and in inspiration to other female inventors and entrepreneurs from developing countries, who – like her – all too often underestimate their talent.
