Who were the biggest users of the Madrid System in 2025?
Applicants in the United States of America filed the highest number of international trademark applications (10,997) – a 2.5% decrease on 2024 – followed by Germany (6,106) (-5.3%), China (5,636) (-4.9%), France (4,026) (-4.4%) and the United Kingdom (UK) (3,871) (+3.7%).
L'Oréal of France maintained its lead position for a fifth consecutive year, filing 274 applications. The USA’s “Light and Wonder, Inc. climbed 38 spots to become the second top filer (105 applications), followed by Slovenia’s Krka, Tovarna Zdravil, D.D., Novo Mesto (101).
The most used classes of goods and services
About 80% of all international trademark applications filed in 2025 included between one and three goods or services classes.
Class 9 – which includes computer hardware and software – of the Nice Classification accounted for some 10.8% of all classes of goods and services specified in 2025 international trademark applications.
Other top classes included class 35 (services such as office functions, advertising and business management); class 42 (services provided by scientific, industrial or technological engineers, etc.) and class 41 (services in the areas of education, training, entertainment, sporting and cultural activities).
Expanding geographical scope of protection (subsequent designation)
There were 2.5% more subsequent designation requests in 2025 than in 2024, marking a third year of growth. Requests have grown steadily over the past 15 years — from over 43,000 in 2011 to over 68,000 in 2025 – a 57% increase.
This reflects not only the accession of new members to the Madrid System and the incentive for international trademark registration holders to extend protection to those members, but also a broader strategic push by holders to expand commercial activities into long-established member markets.
