IP Learning in the Metaverse

The 2021 edition of the Advanced International Certificate Course on Intellectual Property (IP) Asset Management (AICC) for business professionals took place virtually for the second year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s edition offered expert lectures via Zoom and group discussions via Gather Town, a metaverse platform, from November 1 to 5, 2021.
The annual training course is jointly organized by the WIPO Academy, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA), and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The AICC is offered with the support of the Republic of Korea Funds-in-Trust for IP Education.
The AICC marks WIPO Academy’s first IP course offered in a metaverse environment, highlighting a new and innovative era of delivering IP education, training and skills-building. The metaverse environment enables participants to immerse themselves in a virtual education setting, as a substitute to real-life classrooms in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
What did the AICC cover?
Fifty business professionals from 36 countries participated virtually in the AICC and benefitted from interactive lectures and exercises on global IP management strategies, covering topics such as:
- Innovation management;
- Open innovation, open licensing and open source;
- Alternative dispute resolution via a simulation game;
- Metaverse, artificial intelligence and IP; and
- A negotiation game on licensing.
The 2021 edition of the training course was preceded by an online phase consisting of the IP Panorama Multimedia Toolkit and the Advanced Distance Learning Course on IP Management (DL-450), which 1,317 participants from 120 countries completed in an effort to qualify for the AICC.
