WIPO Director General Visits Ghana, Underlines how IP-backed Innovation Can Support Ghana’s Economic Transformation

At the heart of WIPO Director General Daren Tang’s meetings in Ghana from November 19-21, 2025 – including with President John Dramani Mahama - was how intellectual property (IP)-backed innovation can support Ghana’s development and economic transformation ambitions.

Mr. Tang pledged WIPO’s support to Ghana in reviewing and updating the country’s existing national IP Policy and strategy aligning with the country’s new vision and supporting its implementation upon adoption by the country. He also welcomed Government plans to bring all IP related institutions under one authority and agreed to deepen collaboration on youth and SMEs mentoring, agricultural innovation and creative industries development.

Accra engagements

  • The critical role of IP in the development of Ghana’s cultural, creative and innovative industries was at the center of talks with President Mahama.
  • Met with Ghanaian Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dominic Akuritinga Ayine to take stock of bilateral cooperation and pledged WIPO’s continuing support in strengthening Ghana’s IP ecosystem. 
  • Outlined WIPO’s capacity building and mentoring projects in a meeting with Minister for Trade, Industry and Agribusiness Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.  The Minister welcomed WIPO’s offer to help the country’s SMEs and entrepreneurs to use IP for developing their businesses. 
  • Discussed with Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment George Opare Addo how WIPO can train and mentor Ghana’s significant youth population in IP so it becomes part of their entrepreneurial journey.
  • The importance of science and data to the country’s agricultural development was at the heart of the discussion between Mr. Tang and Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku. The Minister said science is the foundation for agriculture development.
  • Agreed to work with the office of Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie on supporting the development of the creative economy.
  • Met with the Head of the Office of Civil Service Evans Aggrey-Darkoh who suggested the creation of IP focal points within the various ministries to become champions that will help to promote IP as a strategic tool for development across industries. 
  • Exchanged views with Registrar-General Grace Issahaque on how WIPO can further support the work of Ghana’s IP Office (GHIPO).
  • At the University of Ghana, Mr. Tang met with the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development Felix Ankomah Asante in the company of researchers, academics and heads of faculties involved in IP management and technology transfer. 
  • Spoke at the opening of the 22nd session of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) Council of Ministers and engaged in bilateral discussions with attending ministers, heads of IP offices and other ARIPO officials.
