Details

Subject/Type: IP Knowledge, IP Protection
Focus: Economic / Financial Impact, Patents
Country/Territory: France
Objective: To find out about business managers' opinions regarding patents, intellectual property and the INPI.
Sample: 506 business managers with 10+ employees
Methodology: Telephone interviews

Main Findings

21% of industrial businesses have applied for a patent. 47% could imagine doing so. Overall, 89% of business managers regard patents as useful to encourage innovation. Two in three respondents believe that patents protect their enterprise and its activity, and 54% consider them useful to encourage innovation within their business.

Half the respondents agree that patents help their business develop and grow; those who have applied for a patent judge its utility higher. 11% of businesses surveyed affirm that they have experienced intellectual/industrial property related problems.

The Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI) is well known: 83% of respondents know that it delivers patents, 76% know its services, and 70% are aware of its role in combating counterfeiting.

Business managers point out that new counterfeit products have appeared: medicines, electronic devices, and auto parts. Still, the fashion and luxury industries are most affected by fakes (apparel, jewellery, leather products).
