Details
Subject/Type: | Piracy |
Focus: | Music |
Country/Territory: | United States of America |
Objective: | To find out about the American public's view on downloading music from the Internet. |
Sample: | A nationwide cross section of 2.306 adult Americans |
Methodology: | Online survey |
Main Findings
A large majority of the American public (75%) views downloading music from the Internet for personal use as an innocent act; however, they consider selling downloaded music piracy and agree it should be prohibited.
While about two thirds of Americans agree that musicians and recording companies are entitled to their full financial benefit, they consider high CD prices the main reason for Internet music piracy.
According to the author, these numbers demonstrate the difficulty the music industry faces in convincing Americans about prohibitions against downloading. A possible way forward is to make the public aware of the presently ignored link between Internet downloading and its financial impact on musicians and the recording industry.
