Global Dissemination of IP Data Initiative: Data Specifications

Mutually agreeable data formats

Published on April 28, 2015

Any machine readable format is agreeable. However, when available at the contributing office, some formats are easier to use by the International Bureau (IB) and are listed below by order of preference, structured data being also always preferable to unstructured data:

  • For structured data: WIPO Standard ST.36 PDF, WIPO Standard ST.36, WIPO Standard ST.66 PDF, WIPO Standard ST.66, WIPO Standard ST.86 PDF, WIPO Standard ST.86, WIPO Standard ST.96 PDF, WIPO Standard ST.96, WIPO Standard ST.32 PDF, WIPO Standard ST.32, any national XML documented with a document type definition (DTD) or a schema, any national SGML documented with a DTD, csv files, any documented flat file structure containing records, database exports.
  • For data only available in unstructured format: Single TIFF A4 images in black and white 300 DPIS (for patent application bodies), JPEG, PNG, color TIFF, PDF with embedded text and images, PDF without embedded text, any documented flat file structure containing text.

Transfer means and transfer frequency

Transfer of data from the participating office to WIPO is flexible.  The IB currently supports:

  • FTP pull – wherein the office provides WIPO access to an ftp transfer site from which WIPO retrieves data when available.
  • FTP push – wherein the office uploads necessary data files to WIPO for processing.
  • Web services – wherein WIPO connects to an office’s existing web service platform to retrieve data on a regular basis.
  • Physical media – wherein physical media containing the required data are delivered to WIPO via mail, and uploaded into the database manually as soon as possible.  This is the least desirable option for regular updates and the preferred solution for back files.

The recommended update frequency is daily for trademarks and weekly for patents and industrial designs.
