About the Global Innovation Index
GII 2026 ranks the innovation performance of around 140 economies and takes the pulse of innovation against a background of global realignments, uneven growth, fragile venture capital markets, and rapid advances in deep science, from AI and biotechnology to advanced materials, semiconductors, and clean energy, asking how economies can turn scientific breakthroughs into scalable ventures and broad-based impact.
GII has been published by WIPO since 2007, and it has been an invaluable reference for countries wanting to develop innovation and economic policy strategies and a tool for improving innovation metrics.
