Singapore Patent Attorneys Volunteering for the IAP
Transcript

Assistant Director, Innovation and Technology Transfer

I volunteer for IAP because as a patent attorney, I know that patent drafting cost can be quite cost prohibitive for young entrepreneurs. So, to help negate some of those costs, that would be facilitating their journey as an entrepreneur and also by educating them to provide good invention disclosures that can also alleviate some of the cost when they eventually take the draft to the patent firms for filing.
Dr. Eugene Yang
Patent Attorney

I used to work in the universities of Singapore, doing research. I've come across many inventors who would come up with many inventions and innovations that are capable of being patented. However, due to the costs, many do not take the next step forward. I hope that by joining the IAP program, I can help inventors take the next step.
For young innovators as well as entrepreneurs, be curious and also remember to give back when you are successful.
I think youths today need to be more aware of intellectual property, especially those that intend to take the entrepreneur journey. For entrepreneurs, it is important for them to have an IP srtategy right from the start so that they can prevent other people from just simply copying their IP.

Pattent Attorney (Senior Associate)

I feel the duty to contribute back to the commmunity and to serve others in my professional capacity. The IAP supports young inventors with their IP needs. I think it is important for them to get patent protection for their new products and solutions. But at the same time, do not forget about the business and commercialization aspects.

During my career, I think I have been fairly fortunate. I woul like to give back, which is one of the reasons why I am part of the IAP. One other reason is that having seen inventors try to file their own patents of IP in general, one of the issues is that they either end up with something that's not commercially useful because it's too narrow or it's one of these things where it's not formally done in a way that would actually get a patent. So, one of the things I'd like to do is help people make sure that they get adequate protection.
