WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited China from March 22-27, 2026, where he attended the annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan.
In keynote presentations at the Boao Forum, Mr. Tang highlighted the growing convergence of industrial innovation, digital innovation and culture, noting that this trend as well as the development of AI is increasingly shaping the future of IP, innovation and creativity.
During his visit, Mr. Tang also met with senior officials in Beijing and Boao:
- Called on Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang to discuss the future IP and innovation developments in China and globally.
- Discussed with Head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee Li Shulei and Executive Deputy Head Hu Heping challenges and opportunities to the creative economy arising from AI.
- Engaged with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Miao Deyu on the latest developments relevant to WIPO as a multilateral institution.
- Conducted a meeting with Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration Shen Changyu on how to continue China-WIPO cooperation.
- Engaged with President of the China Media Group (CMG) Shen Haixiong on strengthening copyright protection and enforcement.
- Met with Vice Governor of Hainan Li Feng to discuss the role of IP in promoting innovation in the province of Hainan.
- Discussed future cooperation with Secretary-General of the Boao Forum for Asia Zhang Jun.
