WIPO Director General Visits Viet Nam, Pledges Support for Nation’s Innovation Agenda

WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited Viet Nam from September 25-26, 2025, to underscore WIPO’s commitment to support the country’s innovation agenda including Resolution 57, a new strategy launched this year charting Viet Nam’s transition towards a higher-income, digital-focused economy.

During his opening remarks at a launch event for WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII), Mr. Tang highlighted that Viet Nam has outperformed in innovation development for 15 straight years. It is among the emerging economies that climbed the most over the past decade, from 76th place in 2013 to 44th in 2025.

Other Hanoi engagements:

  • Met Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and discussed innovation-driven economics and growth strategies to attract talent, create jobs and generate new products and services for the global market.
  • Held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung to discuss how to increase the value of Vietnamese IP, including recognizable brands, and the role of intangible assets to help Viet Nam move up the global value chain.
  • Met with Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung and spoke about deepening the linkage between the digital and creative economies, and how new technologies can be more widely applied to scale up cultural industries.
  • Engaged with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang on how to advance Viet Nam’s global role through strategic IP, regional leadership and multilateral collaboration.
  • Signed a new Memorandum of Understanding between WIPO and IP Viet Nam to strengthen cooperation across six strategic areas, including IP commercialization, policy development and capacity building.
  • Visited Viettel Group and met with the senior management team to hear about Viettel’s goals of evolving from telecom giant to tech innovator, leveraging IP as a strategic asset to drive global growth.
  • Delivered a keynote address at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT) focusing on Viet Nam’s shift towards an innovation-driven economy powered by IP.
  • Delivered opening remarks at a Global Innovation Index (GII) launch event in Viet Nam.
