WIPO Director General Pledges Support to Strengthening Algeria’s Innovation Ecosystem

WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited Algeria from September 3-6, 2025, for a series of high-level engagements to underscore WIPO’s commitment to support Algeria’s national development goals and empower the next generation of innovators and creators through IP-backed innovation.

Areas discussed in meetings with Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and other cabinet members included strengthening the IP ecosystem, fostering innovation, supporting creative industries, enhancing IP education and promoting IP-backed financing for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups.

The Director General also addressed the African Union Youth Startup Pavilion on WIPO’s work in protection, commercialization, skills and youth empowerment.

Highlights of key engagements:

  • Met with Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb to discuss key WIPO initiatives in Algeria and explore opportunities to strengthen the IP ecosystem.
  • Met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf for discussions on international IP cooperation and Algeria’s role in regional and global IP dialogues.
  • Discussed with Minister of Culture and Arts Zouhir Ballalou Algeria’s potential as a cultural and creative hub and WIPO’s Creators Learn IP (CLIP) initiative. They agreed to launch a study on the impact of cultural and creative industries on the Algerian economy.
  • Engaged with Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro Enterprises Noureddine Ouadah on fostering innovation and leveraging IP-backed financing for MSMEs and startups.
  • Discussed with Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari WIPO’s readiness to support IP education in Algeria through WIPO Academy programs.
  • Met with innovators at the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene to discuss strategic use of IP.
  • Addressed the African Union Youth Startup Pavilion and the African Women in Processing Forum, highlighting how Africa’s youth are reshaping the continent through innovation and how WIPO is making IP a tool for all - startups, SMEs, women, youth, and rural communities - while focusing on protection, commercialization, skills and youth empowerment in partnership with the African Union.
  • Engaged with young startups benefiting from WIPO’s IP Management Clinic Project “Moubadart’Art.”
  • Interacted with participants in WIPO projects promoting Chechar honeybee, Babar and Ghardaïa carpets and Tolga Deglet Nour dates.
  • Attended an event at the WIPO Algeria Office to formally inaugurate the office, alongside ministers and other stakeholders.
