Virtual Regional Meeting of Intellectual Property Office Officials Responsible for the Madrid System in Selected Asia and Pacific Countries

We held a virtual regional meeting on the Madrid System for selected current (and future) members in the Asia and Pacific region, from March 23 to 29, 2022. The event was organized with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss operational issues and further promotion of the Madrid System, and to share experiences accession to the System.

Around 80 participants attended the meeting:

Member countries: Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam;

Non-member countries: Bangladesh, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka.

About the meeting

The meeting focused on operations at the level of both the office of origin and the office of a designated member, classification, data communication (IPAS, Madrid Office Portal and Madrid e-Filing), how to prepare for the accession to, and further promote, the Madrid System. Three officials from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) delivered speeches during the course of the event. Participants and JPO representatives actively shared their experiences throughout the five days.

Participating IP offices, WIPO and the JPO reached a consensus to continue to collaborate to improve the consistency and efficiency of their operations and to increase further use of the Madrid System.
